Europe Builds Its Own Battery Backbone: Inside Skoda's 205 Million Euro Bet
Skoda Auto has opened a 55,000 square metre battery systems hall in Mlada Boleslav, a 205 million euro investment that makes it the largest battery system manufacturer inside the Volkswagen Group.
Europe has spent years talking about battery sovereignty. In Mladá Boleslav, someone poured the concrete.
Škoda Auto has opened a new battery systems assembly hall at its main Czech plant, a €205 million investment covering roughly 55,000 square metres with capacity for up to 335,000 battery systems a year. That volume makes Škoda the largest battery system manufacturer within the Volkswagen Group.
Why a hall matters more than a headline
- Supply security — battery systems assembled inside Europe reduce exposure to long, fragile import chains.
- Scale across brands — output feeds models across several Group brands rather than a single nameplate.
- Industrial continuity — a legacy plant converts to electric production instead of being written off.
- Regional anchoring — Central Europe keeps high-value manufacturing rather than exporting it.
The wider European picture
Škoda’s hall is one node in a much larger build-out. Volkswagen’s PowerCo unit is ramping a plant in Valencia, Spain, with industry reporting pointing to talks over an equity stake by a Chinese battery partner. Stellantis and CATL are staffing up a gigafactory near Zaragoza, where the first cohorts of technicians are already on site and the start date has slipped. Together they sketch the real state of European electrification: serious capital, genuine progress, and timelines that keep negotiating with reality.
What to watch next
The question is no longer whether Europe can assemble batteries. It is whether the continent can secure cells, chemistry and the raw materials behind them without simply relocating the dependency one step upstream. Plants like Mladá Boleslav are the visible half of that answer.
